Step into the heart of musical drama with Schubert’s emotionally charged “Tragic” Symphony. This concert showcases the brilliant young talents of Ella Tasker and Sean Choi, first-place winners of the Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Competition, performing selections from Mozart’s lyrical Violin Concerto No. 4 and Beethoven’s radiant Piano Concerto No. 4, respectively. And we open the evening with the stormy passion of Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture. This afternoon is a perfect blend of elegance and fire.

The Sangre de Cristo Chorale will open its 48th season on October 11 and 12 in Santa Fe. This concert celebrates the changing seasons with music by Jonathan Dove, Aaron Copland, Z. Randall Stroope, Craig Hella Johnson, and more. Dove’s The Passing of the Year weaves poetry by Blake, Dickinson, Tennyson, and others into a dramatic telling of the joyful and poignant passing of a year. The 52-member Chorale is led by Music Director George Case.

The 2025-2026 NMPhil season opens with a powerful and poignant tribute to history, featuring Krzysztof Penderecki’s To the Victims of Hiroshima. This haunting work, written in 1960, commemorates the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The evening continues with Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs, a serene yet bittersweet reflection on life and mortality. The program culminates in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, a piece that blends the grandeur of symphonic form with the innocence of childhood imagination.

Local pianist Fred Sturm will perform a concert of solo piano music of Latin American composers from Venezuela, Uruguay, Mexico and Brazil. Included on the program will be Venezuelan Modesta Bor’s Suite Criolla, Mexican Arturo Márquez’ Días de Mar y Rio, Uruguayan Miguel del Águila’s Sonata 2, Mexican Federico Ibarra’s Sonata 2, and Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Ciclo Brasileiro.
