Join the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History for a day of fun celebrating the culture and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. On Saturday, May 2, the annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Festival will allow guests to explore the museum and enjoy cultural performances, music, exquisite Japanese floral arrangements, and intricate Chinese art activities from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The event is hosted in partnership with the Sandia National Laboratories Asian Leadership Outreach Committee.

Be captivated by the grace of traditional dance, the power of BK Taiko drums, and the intricate beauty and vibrancy of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander culture and artistry. This family-friendly event celebrates the ancestry, native languages, and unique experiences that weave the rich tapestry of our heritage.

The Same Place at the Same Time is a series of three exhibition rotations that trace how art lives within, emerges from, and connects Taos’ creative communities. By gathering a varied array of arts—wood-fired ceramics, volunteer radio, and Pueblo foodways—into the rotating gallery space, the exhibition highlights the many interconnected maker groups within our larger Taos community. The inclusion of visual art, music, and food emphasizes the diversity of creativity that constructs thriving cultures and communities.

The exhibition is process-focused and collectively developed, documenting how these groups operate and co-curated by the groups themselves. It explores the wide-ranging organizational structures of these collectives, in turn allowing us to consider how these frameworks influence art making, relationships, and the rich culture of Taos. It asks how we might further nurture this expansive web of connections, both inside and outside of the gallery space.

Harwood Museum of Art is honored to collaborate with local artists, makers, and cultural leaders who shape and define Taos’s remarkable artistic landscape.

Pursuit of Happiness: Gi Bill in Taos refocuses the story of post-World War II artistic movements by highlighting those artists working, communing, and connecting in Taos from 1945 onward. These artists founded the next great wave of abstraction that took root in the region, bringing their vast creativity and international connections to the community. Highlighting works from Harwood Museum of Art’s permanent collection and sourcing significant loans regionally and nationally, this exhibition tells the story of how Taos contributed to conversations and explorations in the national art scene during the post-World War II period.

Harwood Museum is teaming up with the Taos Public Library to offer a FREE monthly story time for young artists. Suitable for all ages. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants enjoy complimentary museum admission following the program.

The public is invited to an open house event on May 2 from 11am to 4 pm to celebrate the relocation of a venerable institution in the Albuquerque spiritual community. Rio Grande Center for Spiritual Living will host the event, featuring live music, food, fun activities for kids, and an art exhibit to celebrate their new location at 2404 San Mateo Place NE. The event is free and open to everyone.

“We’re excited to introduce ourselves to the neighbors and to the Albuquerque community at large,” says Spiritual Director Reverend Gil Olmstead. “Before this move, we were in an industrial park. Now we’re more visible and more accessible, which fits our mission of being a welcoming, inclusive spiritual home for everyone.”

The activities reflect the values of the RGCSL community including an art exhibit showcasing the talents of RGCSL members, which will open on the 2nd and hang through the month of May. “We believe in nurturing and celebrating all forms of creativity,” Olmstead says, adding, “Art brings people together. This show is the first of many. There will be open calls for future shows, where we’ll showcase work by artists from the community.

“Our motto is ‘All faiths welcome, none required. We hope this open house will introduce us to some folks who may have been looking for a spiritual home here in Albuquerque. Mostly, we just hope people come and have a good time.”
