The World Gay Rodeo Finals will be hosted this Saturday and Sunday at Expo New Mexico in Albuquerque.

With the event, the New Mexico Gay Rodeo Association aims to provide a safe space for people who identify as LGBTQ to compete and share their experiences.

Membership Chairman Keith Holtzclaw said the rodeo also gives people who are less familiar a chance to change their perception about the LGBTQ community.

"There’s still a lot of people that have a lot of preconceived ideas about what it’s like to be around gay people," Holtzclaw explained, "But if they would take a risk, come to the gay rodeo, see how much fun it could be.”

There’ll be traditional rodeo events like bull riding and calf roping, as well as other events like steer decoration and the wild drag queen race.

Folks will compete for cash prizes and the title of All Around Cowboy and All Around Cowgirl. All money raised will go to selected charities.
