Many initiatives are underway to celebrate the 100th birthday of Route 66, including an event at the International District Library in Albuquerque, located right on the Mother Road. Organized by Together for Brothers, a Zine-making event will be held on Tuesday to document the history of queer culture on Route 66.

Monday marked the beginning of International Open Access Week, but the Open Educational Resources Consortium at the University of New Mexico started celebrating Oct. 1 with webinars and workshops. This week it will host a free book fair.

Studies show that reading for pleasure boosts cognitive thinking abilities and improves mental health. As reading has fallen out of fashion, bookstores and libraries are brainstorming ways to keep the reading community alive. One answer: book clubs.

While many states have considered or passed laws making it easier to remove books from libraries, others have bucked that trend. In New Mexico, some local efforts to remove books have prompted state lawmakers to try to protect librarians from that kind of pressure.

Albuquerque residents have several bonds on their ballots this election related to education. Central New Mexico Community College, Albuquerque Public Schools, and city libraries and museums all stand to receive millions in public funding for capital projects. The largest of the three, which will appear on Bernalillo and Sandoval County ballots, is for CNM, which stands to receive $80 million for campus improvements.
