For decades starting in 1907 Indigenous women and women of color across the country, including New Mexico, were forced or coerced into sterilizations without their informed consent. On Thursday, a coalition of Indigenous women’s reproductive rights advocates called on state lawmakers to create a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate the abuses.

May 5th marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People across the country. In Albuquerque, the Indian Affairs Department held an event on Monday at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center where families of the missing, state officials and advocates came together to bring awareness to the ongoing crisis.

The New Mexico spring winds were not kind Sunday afternoon, but that did not deter hundreds of people from gathering to witness Indigenous dancers dressed in their traditional regalia moving to the beat of drums surrounded by onlookers in a circle.

On this episode we talk with Nicolle Gonzales, She is a nurse-midwife from the Navajo Nation and has dedicated her life to addressing Native American maternal health disparities around access to care while reclaiming indigenous birthing practices and supporting the return of indigenous midwives to communities.
