A trio of major oil and gas producers are testing a new-to-New Mexico process to keep natural gas in the ground when it can’t be transported, sold or otherwise shipped through a pipeline. So far, New Mexico’s closed-loop gas capture systems projects are small, and their promise hasn’t panned out in the oil and gas fields.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has made the creation of a hydrogen hub in New Mexico a priority in the current legislative session. But despite claims of this fuel being more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels, there are significant issues with developing hydrogen. That’s according to Capital & Main’s Jerry Redfern, who spoke with KUNM’s Megan Kamerick.

The Environmental Protection Agency kicked off a series of public hearings Tuesday, Nov. 30, on its proposed rule to reduce methane from oil and gas operations. New Mexico is the second largest producer of oil in the nation, but also a leader in curbing air pollution from the industry. Local advocates called on the EPA to follow the state’s lead and strengthen the proposal.
