Comprehensive sex education helps address and prevent sexual assault. The University of New Mexico is hosting lectures, workshops, and discussions as part of the annual Sex Week.

Hunter Riley, Operations and Outreach Manager at Self Serve Sexuality Resource Center, said if students have more information about sex, they’ll be better equipped to make important decisions about health and relationships.

“So, if we can teach students how to talk about sex in a positive way, we can teach them to say yes," said Riley, “and we can also teach them to say no, and help them feel empowered in that decision.”

There’s a real need for information about sex and consent, Riley said, especially considering the high rates of sexual assault at UNM.

Self Serve is one of the organizations that puts on Sex Week at UNM.

The event has been a source of controversy for UNM in recent years. Conservative student groups and publications said the content, and how it was displayed, wasn’t appropriate on campus.

Serve Serve and the UNM Student Alliance for Reproductive Justice will be hosting events from Oct. 23 to 27 on the Albuquerque campus.
