UNM Students To Pay New Online Fees

Students at the University of New Mexico who pay their tuition online are going to have reach deeper into their pockets this semester. A 2.75 percent processing fee kicked in about a week before classes started.

UNM used to cover the electronic processing fees when students paid tuition with credit or debit cards. But after this year’s legislative budget shortfall, the university is passing that cost along to students. A resident could pay as much as $90 for the semester. For a non-resident? Close to $300.

“My initial reaction when I saw that was like, ‘Aww no!’” said UNM student Nichole Harwood. “I live a very busy life. So it’s kind of hard when the simplest things, like paying something, are basically made more difficult."

UNM's Bursar says there are ways to avoid the fees. Students can pay in the Bursar’s Office in cash or check. Or they can pay online without the fee by making out an electronic check.

Students received an email last month with their tuition bill explaining the fees. But, Harwood says she would have been better warned if UNM sent out a letter or put a notice on the student homepage.
