In the wake of a so-called “riot” at New Mexico’s largest jail for kids, young people face charges and a parents' group is demanding changes.

On Christmas Day, young people in the state’s largest youth detention center protested conditions for five hours, and three were later treated for injuries.Now, formerly incarcerated young people and families of kids who are currently detained are giving the county a list of demands for changes.

On Thanksgiving, CYFD sent foster children to a facility for violent youth. At Christmas, kids ran away.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s September public health order didn’t only call for a ban on open and concealed carry of firearms. Youth detention numbers have been rising since the order took effect, and while the governor said that could get more young people into addiction treatment, experts say otherwise.
