In the fight against the opioid epidemic, Medication Assisted Treatment, or MAT, is widely considered the most effective treatment for opioid use disorders. Now, research from the University of New Mexico shows when given to people behind bars, it’s less likely they’ll end up going back once released.

About 50 people from across the country met at Albuquerque’s Uptown Sheraton hotel over the weekend with one common thing uniting them: All had lost a loved one to overdose. Something else they shared — a passion to fight the opioid crisis.

On Saturday, almost 200 people packed into a conference room at the International District Library to give their input on how the county and city governments should fight the opioid epidemic. The two governments have partnered to share their portion of New Mexico's Opioid Settlement Funds, which they've paused spending while crafting a strategic plan for the almost $150 million, 70% of which has to be spent fighting the opioid crisis.
