In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (IPCC), this exhibition highlights the Center’s history through Pueblo imagery and perspectives of the past, present, and future. A combination of fifty objects from the IPCC’s Collections and Archives, with an emphasis on Pueblo pottery, illustrates the significance of the Center as a gathering place where Pueblo arts and culture are celebrated by visitors from around the world and, at once, nurtured by Pueblo communities across the generations. Gallery videos, updated throughout the year, will feature interviews with Pueblo artists, scholars, and culture bearers that present insider views of the IPCC. Join us to celebrate the exhibition on March 21 from 5-8pm during our free, public reception. Organized by the School for Advanced Research (SAR) and the Vilcek Foundation, Grounded in Clay: The Spirit of Pueblo Pottery, a unique traveling exhibition featuring over 100 historic and contemporary works in clay, offers a visionary understanding of Pueblo pots as vessels that carry community-based knowledge and personal experience. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (IPCC), established by the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico in 1976, welcomes the pottery vessels back to the Southwest as the “returning home” host venue of the exhibition’s four-year national tour. Curated by the Pueblo Pottery Collective, Grounded in Clay opens at the IPCC as the leading program of the Center’s 50th anniversary celebration year. The exhibition and its associated events are generously supported by the First Nations Development Institute and Noon Whistle Fund.

On the 100th anniversary of Route 66 in 2026, experience “The Old Road”—a mural that at once remembers the first major highway traversing the United States and gives emphasis to its impact on Pueblo communities and New Mexico. Through the eyes of artists Warren Montoya (Pueblos of Santa Ana/Santa Clara), Margarita Paz-Pedro (Pueblo of Laguna/Mexican American), Akilah Martinez (Diné), and Keith Scott (Pueblo of Laguna), this multi-dimensional installation travels through time showing Pueblo people and places along the “Mother Road,” otherwise known as Route 66. Explore the eccentric narrative created by these artists as they look at multiple roads simultaneously, from ancestral times to recent history, to glimpses of the present and future. Already a historic exchange route within Indigenous communities, Route 66 still echoes in the personality and culture of New Mexico byways. Journey through this mural located in the Art Through Struggle Gallery at the end of the IPCC’s permanent exhibition.

Let’s a paint a big animal portrait in a weekend! Even if you’ve never painted – or never painted in oils – this workshop will get you painting fast. You’ll learn the basics of painting in oils, from start to finish, with your favorite animal – pet or wild – as a subject. This is a skill-building class in a warm and welcoming environment. We’re going big (16×16 inches or bigger) for dramatic effect and bold brushwork. All levels, including brand new beginners, welcome.

The NMSU Art Museum is pleased to present On the Edge, an exhibition that traces the trajectory of Shirley Crow’s career, exploring an artistic practice grounded in a lasting sense of wonder about the mysteries of the universe. Spanning nearly fifty years, and including pastel, ink, graphite, and oil, Crow’s work invites viewers to experience her intuitive visual language informed by the magic of creativity and an ongoing questioning of our existence. Opening reception for Shirley Crow: On the Edge is on October 16 from 5:30-7:30 pm, and will be on display through July 17, 2027.

Unearthing Futures / Desenterrando Futuros explores contemporary earthen artworks, establishing a profound dialogue between regional roots and global perspectives. As visitors engage with the exhibition, they embark on a journey through time, examining the intricate relationship between humanity and the elemental material of unfired earth.

A gala music and dance event showcasing the holiday traditions throughout Mexico.

This event is kicked off with Venta de Navidad a market of local artists, crafters and more, with great holiday gifts. Also, a cash bar, posole and bisquechitos for sale!

Swirling dresses, lively violins, and the sights and sounds of folkloric dancing accompany the clear peal of trumpets in our holiday tradition, Mariachi Christmas. Now in its 22nd year in Albuquerque and 10th in Socorro, the show rings in the holiday season with exuberant mariachi music and dance to represent the traditions of Mexico at Christmas time. This year's featured groups are: Mariachi Mexico Mestizo and Ballet Folklorico University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley. Join us for a colorful and entertaining show curated by the founder of the Mariachi Spectacular, Norberta Fresquez.

Mariachi Christmas has become a beloved holiday tradition right here in Socorro, a highly anticipated seasonal spectacular bringing together families and students from all across our high-desert community and beyond.
