New Mexico – and the United States are one step closer to having the first female Native American governor as former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland beat out her Democratic opponent Sam Bregman with 72% of the vote Tuesday night in the primary election.

Republican Gregg Hull, the former three-term mayor of one of New Mexico’s largest cities, has won his party’s nomination in the governor’s race.

Early voting for New Mexico’s primary continues through Saturday and Election Day is June 2nd. This year marks the state’s first semi-open primary election, which means independent and unaffiliated voters can now participate in primary races.

Santa Fe County is once again giving young people the chance to experience the voting process firsthand through its KidsVote program. The initiative aims to show them how to cast a ballot to ease anxieties about voting in the future.

In New Mexico, only those registered with a major political party can vote in its primary elections. A bill moving through the state Legislature would change that for voters who aren’t affiliated with a party, or who “decline to state.”

With the general election coming up on November 5th, a new initiative aims to increase transparency and trust among New Mexico voters.
